Join Carlos Ponce and Justin O’Connor, Founder of Onward, for the episode 22 of the 2026 Advancio Tech Talk Edition!

Episode Summary

In the fast-paced world of technology, staying relevant is often described as a marathon. But for Paul Zikopoulos, Skills, Vitality, and Enablement Specialist at IBM, it’s more about a lifelong commitment to curiosity. With a 31-year career at one of the world’s most iconic tech giants, Paul’s journey from a business major with zero coding experience to a leading voice in AI and data is a masterclass in professional evolution.

In this episode of Advancio Talks, Paul joins host Carlos Ponce to discuss the shift from traditional workflows to an AI-first mindset and how companies of all sizes can build a future-ready workforce.

From Zero Coding to IBM Tech Leader

Paul refers to himself as the “Accidental Data Nerd.” He joined IBM as a technical writer in the 1990s without ever having taken a computer course. By teaching himself to program and maintaining a “learning hobby,” he rose through the ranks of development, product management, and technical sales to his current role leading global enablement strategy.

His secret? The 1% Rule. Paul believes that if you get 1% smarter every day, the compound effect over decades leads to mastery.

Moving from “Plus AI” to “AI Plus”

One of the most critical takeaways for tech leaders in this episode is Paul’s distinction between two common corporate strategies:

  • Plus AI Strategy: Adding AI on top of existing, often inefficient, workflows. This rarely leads to true transformation.

  • AI Plus Strategy: Reengineering business processes from the ground up with AI at the core, treating workflows like microservices that can be composed into modern, scalable applications.

The Humanity of AI: Culture Over Technology

While many fear AI will replace human roles, Paul views it as a net job creator that will primarily disrupt those who refuse to adapt. He emphasizes that while technology is easy, culture is hard.

For companies looking to build AI-ready teams, Paul suggests three impactful steps:

  1. Hire for Curiosity: Technical skills can be taught; the drive to learn cannot.

  2. Establish Information Architecture (IA): You cannot have effective AI without clean, governed data (“Shitty data in, shitty data out”).

  3. Encourage “Sandboxing”: Give employees the tools and the time—ideally 20% of their week—to play with technology and satisfy their curiosity.

“Cloud is a Capability, Not a Destination”

A published O’Reilly author on hybrid cloud, Paul warns against the misconception that “cloud” only means the public cloud. He advocates for a hybrid cloud approach, where applications are built “cloud-native” so they can run wherever they are most efficient—whether that is on-premise for cost-savings and security or in the public cloud for scale.

Key Episode Highlights:

  • The “Accidental” Career: How Paul navigated 31 years at IBM through constant adaptation.

  • Tech Years vs. Dog Years: Why GenAI moves at “mice years” and how to keep your skills from expiring.

  • AI in Education: How IBM uses AI to generate personalized, dynamic learning plans for 250,000+ employees.

  • The Future of Work: Why the “new collar” job market requires AI literacy regardless of your industry.
